3-Day vs 4-Day Desert Tour from Marrakech: Which Route Fits?

A quick answer before you book

If you want to see the Erg Chebbi dunes and return to Marrakech, start with the 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour. If your Morocco itinerary continues to Fes, the 4-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour crosses the Sahara and ends in Fes. The latter is not simply a longer version of the same round trip: it adds time around Merzouga and changes where you finish.

Both routes include major landscapes between Marrakech and the desert. The choice depends less on a headline number of days than on the flights or accommodation you have booked before and after the journey.

This comparison follows the site’s current published itineraries. Exact accommodation, vehicle, meals, camel arrangements and any optional activities should be confirmed on the tour page and in your written quotation.

The three-day round trip

The three-day route leaves Marrakech, crosses the High Atlas, visits Aït Ben Haddou and the gorge country, and reaches Merzouga for the dune experience. It then returns to Marrakech. Because the route covers a great deal of ground in a short time, expect substantial time in the vehicle, especially on the return leg. That trade-off is reasonable if you have only three days and your following reservation is in Marrakech. It is less appealing if you want a leisurely morning in every town along the way.

The highlight is Erg Chebbi, the dune area by Merzouga, rather than a quick look at a desert-style landscape close to Marrakech. Morocco’s tourism office describes Merzouga as a gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes. See the official destination overview.

The four-day one-way crossing

The four-day route also starts in Marrakech and reaches Merzouga through the Atlas and Dades/Todra area. Its published itinerary devotes day three to the desert area, with stops around Rissani and Khamlia before the camel trek and camp night. On day four, it heads through the Ziz Valley, Midelt and the Middle Atlas toward Fes. You avoid doubling back to Marrakech, but the final transfer to Fes is still a long travel day.

This is a useful choice if your next hotel or flight is in Fes. It is not the right route if you need to wake up in Marrakech the day after the tour. Check your onward train or flight plans before choosing the one-way option.

How much time will you actually spend on the road?

Neither option is a short drive from Marrakech. Mountain roads, weather, sightseeing stops and meals affect the schedule. Ask for a realistic daily driving estimate for your dates, not just the distance on a map. On the three-day tour, ask especially about the final return to Marrakech; on the four-day tour, ask about the arrival window in Fes. Treat any arrival time as an estimate until your operator confirms it.

A private trip can give you more say over stops and pace, but it cannot shorten the geography. If long transfers are difficult for anyone in your group, share that concern when requesting a quote. The operator can tell you which route is practical and what adjustments are possible.

What to confirm before paying

Accommodation and camp comfort

Request the names or standard of both overnight stays, whether your desert tent has a private bathroom, and what bedding or heating is available for the season. “Luxury camp” is used differently across operators, so the specific facilities matter more than the label.

Inclusions and optional stops

Check what the quoted amount covers: transport, driver, breakfasts and dinners, local guides, entrance fees, camel trek and any optional desert excursion. The current tour pages list some items as included and others as excluded; your written confirmation should resolve any uncertainties for your group.

Pickup, luggage and drop-off

State your pickup address, the number and size of bags, and your exact destination at the end of the trip. A Fes hotel requires a different plan from a Marrakech round trip. If anyone prefers not to ride a camel, ask about the camp-transfer alternative before booking.

Which one should you choose?

Choose the 3-day Merzouga round trip when Marrakech is both your starting point and your next destination. Choose the 4-day Marrakech–Fes crossing when your journey naturally continues north and the extra desert-area day is valuable to you. If neither itinerary fits your dates, tell the team where you need to finish and how much road time you are comfortable with.

Frequently asked questions

Is the four-day tour a round trip to Marrakech?

No. The currently published four-day itinerary ends in Fes. Confirm the final drop-off location when booking.

Do both trips reach the dunes at Merzouga?

Yes. Both published routes include the Merzouga area and Erg Chebbi. The exact overnight arrangement should be confirmed with the operator.

Is a three-day Merzouga tour too rushed?

It can work if you accept long travel days and want a Sahara experience within a short Marrakech stay. If you prefer a slower pace, explain that preference when asking for an itinerary.

Can we travel without a camel ride?

Ask the operator about an alternative transfer to the camp before you book. Do not assume it is available on every departure.
